Third grade artists finished their advertisement unit last month, and created some visually appealing posters to market their brand new instrument inventions. For fourth quarter, third and fifth grade students will transition to a short study about American female artist, Georgia O'Keeffe, who was born in Wisconsin but later moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico where she was inspired by the southwestern landscape and hispanic symbolism scene the cultures surrounding her. Students are creating realistic animal skulls drawings using pencil shading, and also incorporating a scenic desert background with desert plants and structures. Fifth grade artists also collaborated with music, technology, and library classes to create pastel drawing inspired by our very own planet Earth - the Earthy drawings are out of this world!
Sixth grade artists are completing a traditional comic book inspired comic book strip with six or more panels. They are currently completing the inking process using markers and watercolors. This month, students will explore the art of selfies! Students will learn about proportional facial feature sketching to create their own portraits. Third quarter proved very successful for the seventh and eighth artists. Upon completing their own theme-based tunnel book constructions, students spent time learning about monochromatic and analogous colors. The artists used LOTS of masking tape to create layered abstract painting canvases - the results are eye catching! They are currently learning about juxtaposition - how artists create new meanings by contrasting 2 or more images together in a new and meaningful way. The end result will be a broken up Cubism style collage.
In other news, Art Club ended this week. A big shout out to all the club members for producing the most awesome set designs Smyser has seen yet. The painting and 3D paper panels for the musical, King of Pride Rock, were very well received - thank you for all your help! Next week marks the first week of quarter 4, and also Report Card Pick-Up Day. Let's end the year on an awesome note, artists!
