Welcome to the Smyser Art Program!
Dear Smyser Family,
The Smyser Visual Arts program is flourishing. Art will take place at the Primary Center, Main Building, and Annex.
This year students will explore new art-making techniques, create theme-based projects, and learn about how art relates to our everyday lives. Art is crucial at every age. It allows students to enhance problem-solving and critical thinking skills, create new ways to visualize, all while complementing what we learn in other academic subjects. Art encourages students to challenge themselves, be open-minded, and seek new perspectives.
Collaboration during art class takes lots of mutual work. It is often a busy place and students will help me follow an effective class management strategy that will allow us to use our space and time efficiently. Students will follow routine procedures, take great care of our materials, and most importantly, be respectful and responsible to all peers.
If students need reminding, this may result in several logical consequences:
Warning 1: Verbal warning, name on board/list
Warning 2: Verbal warning #2, Removal of seat, Take a break from Art
Warning 3: Teacher-Student meeting, Phone call home, and/or Loss of privileges such as recess
Warning 4: Detention or "Blue Slip" will be issued.
*The consequences are dependent upon the action that the student chose to take.
Please keep in mind that the CPS Student Code of Conduct is to be followed within all areas and classrooms at school.
Art projects require lots of preparation and material. In order for us to create a variety of artworks, I would like to ask families to bring in any extra materials they may have at home instead of letting them go to waste. Please see the list under the "Materials Needed" page. Any material donations would be greatly appreciated. Also, all students are encouraged to bring an old t-shirt to use during messy days.
If you have any questions or comments please feel free to call 773-534-3711 or e-mail [email protected]. Please contact me 1 day in advance for conference requests.
Sincerely,
Ms. Lee
