Art Grading Rubric:
All Smyser students who have Art class will receive a letter grade on their report cards. Progress reports are distributed halfway through each quarter. Final grades are presented at the end of each quarter. The Art grade is calculated with the same weight as all subject matters, it also counts towards Smyser Honor Roll.
The Art grade consists of several components:
Large Unit Based Projects - 40%
- The majority of the artwork students complete will be longterm theme-based projects that usually take more than 1 class period to complete.
Each unit and each project will have varying guidelines, but they usually include elements such as:
- Project turned in on time
(If you need more time, it is the student's responsibility to set a new due date with Ms. Lee, discuss what materials you may need to borrow, and return the assignment neatly on time)
- Using class time wisely
- Originality/creativity
- Craftsmanship
- Following all requirements & instructions- Independent work and collaborative work
- Independent work and collaborative work
- Effort and participation
- Writing or critique component
Assignments - 20%
- This section includes any short term projects, classroom energizers/bell ringers, reading and writing assignments, homework, sketch activities, class discussions, short quizzes, peer critiques, or other classroom activities usually completed during class.
- This may also be in the form of extra credit students may earn.
Independent Work/Effort/Participation - 20%
- This category is crucial as Smyser Art is about exploring ideas, trying new techniques, discussions, and collaborating with our peers.
- Thinking about art and making art can be challenging at times, however students are encouraged to try their best, learn from their mistakes, and ask questions.
- Art is not just about the end result, it's about the experience, process, and what you gained along the way!
Behavior & Etiquette - 20%
- Maintaining respect and keeping a positive attitude will result in a successful art experience for all students.
- Students are expected to follow all directions and respect the classroom expectations during all classes at Smyser. The Student Code of Conduct is also to be followed during art.
- Can you make art, learn, have fun, while also being a very respectful member of the classroom?
- Successful artists are not only creative and talented, they are often open-minded, responsible, positive, and provide inspiration and encouragement to their peers around them.
