Last week, Smyser artists reflected on how art making can bring out emotions. As we exercised our mental and emotional side, we were able to think about what makes us feel love and acceptance. Students were encouraged to be respectful members of the classroom and always be friendly to our peers regardless of all of our differences.
First grade artists created Lunar New Year inspired drawings to enhance their celebration lanterns. The lower grades also learned about the heart aesthetic paintings of American pop artist, Jim Dine. He is 79 years old and still creating artwork that shows his emotions! Third grade artists finished their Pablo Picasso inspired portraits using oil pastel techniques. Students love this project year to year because it gives us a chance to create ourselves in an altered and transformed way - nobody is perfect and we are all different!
Fourth grade artists have begun their unit on the Harlem Renaissance and Black History Month. Students' collages are underway and artists will be learning proper layering and assemblage techniques this week. The 6th grade artists have been looking at art in pop culture. Students will soon be turning their professional logos into colorful creations! Seventh and Eighth grade artists have transitioned into the 2nd half of the Art History curriculum this year. 3rd and 4th quarter will be all about Modernism and Modern Art. What's a better place than to start with Impressionism? Students learned about Impressionism and Post-Impressionism artists, primarily French artist Claude Monet and Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh. Students have been completing their own Starry Night inspired oil drawings. The results are sparkling! (will post photos soon).
