November is quickly winding down and Smyser artists have been working hard on some new art pieces. Third grade students are learning about our city of Chicago and the tallest skyscrapers in Chicago architecture. They are using rulers, pencils, crayons, and watercolors to create mixed media cityscape paintings. Fourth grade students learned about Surrealism Art and how they incorporate fantasy and dream-like imagery. They discussed the artwork of well-known artists such as Salvador Dalí, Marc Chagall, and René Magritte. They are creating some very mysterious and interesting dreamscape silhouette portrait drawings. Fifth grade artists learned about complimentary colors and cool vs. warm color schemes. They have been creating some very contrasted and colorful watercolor weavings. Our upper grades are learning about the art of western comic books and eastern manga & anime style drawings. Students are creating some unique superhero and villain characters to utilize in their final projects. Photos to come soon!
Our talented 109 classroom artists recently worked on a large-scale mosaic mural featuring a parrot from Eric Carle's story, Today is Monday. Our mural took about 5 days to create. Students painted textured sheets of paper in the style of Eric Carle first, then broke up the paper into mosaic pieces to piece together the full mural. It is currently being displayed on the first floor of the Main Building, near the water fountain by the office. Come take a look!

In other news, club members from the Mind, Body, and He-Art Club have been meeting every week. We have been exploring journal book making, painting, and discussing how to improve Smyser. Stay tuned for some new artwork that will be posted around the buildings soon!
