School is back in full swing and Smyser artists have been learning and creating eagerly! This year grades K, 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, and 8 (selected classes/students) have art. Students in the lower grades have been learning and celebrating International Day of Peace and also one of my favorite artistic holidays, International Dot Day! Students learned about problem solving when an artist has "artist's block." The story titled, The Dot written and illustrated by Peter Reynolds perfectly exhibits a story about students who overcome their frustrations as an artist.
1st grades students are learning about nocturnal animals and how to use lines and shapes to create some feathery creatures! 3rd and 5th grade artists are learning about both symbolism and heritage. Students are creating interesting Flag Designs to symbolize their own identity and cultural backgrounds. Upper grade artists have been working diligently in their NEW sketchbooks (by sketchforschools.com). Students will be documenting, revising, planning, and sharing their personal projects throughout the school year. A sketchbook is a great tool for artists to become problem solvers, inventors, and recorders of information around them. 6th grade is starting their unit on art and marketing, learning about logos and advertising. 7th and 8th grade artists took time this week to practice their shading and mark making techniques. They will incorporate them into abstract technical diptych drawings centered on the theme of emotion - the good, the bad, and the ugly.
September Artists of the Month:
K = Salma Elshabrawy
1st = Sebastian Uribe
3rd = Ansam Abuawad
5th = Olivia Horn
6th = David Wasik and Shyanne Mohr
7th = Dorian Romanowski
8th = Billy Becker
Congratulations! Nice Work!
