3rd grade artists have been finishing up their Symmetrical & Asymmetrical Flag Designs. After learning about the works of Jasper Johns and viewing examples of flags from all around the world, students discussed the meanings and purposes of symbolism and flags. Take a look at a few of their flags in the 3rd grade gallery. Currently, they are starting a unit on Celebrations, and learning about Dia de Los Muertos and the art of papel picado (paper cutting art). 4th grade has been diligently working on Architecture House Drawings and we can't wait to show you the results very soon! 5th grade has been finishing up their facial self-portraits and are starting to add a piece behind it to represent their identities. They are drawing, writing, and mapping together some amazing results. Our upper grades students are exploring some new art media such as charcoal and chalk pastel. They are creating landscapes with ground levels, texture, and balance.
Smyser Artists are in full swing of creating some new and interesting art pieces.

Both our 6th and 7th/8th Grade Art1 - A Day classes were able to take advantage of some warm (and very breezy) weather yesterday. Students learned about observation drawings and how to use quick sketching techniques. They observed some examples of pencil and charcoal landscapes and learned about foreground, middle ground, and background. Students went outside to observe the natural environment around our school and took some time to draw an outdoor scene. They will complete these drawings within the next couple class periods.
Check out the Gallery in the next few weeks to see some landscape drawing results. Great News Smyser Community!
