The school year is in full swing and Smyser artists have been working very diligently!
Art at the Primary Center for 1st grade students has been a very fun and art education packed month. 1st grade artists have been learning about line styles, patterns, and coloring techniques. Students started the school year learning about snakes and their habitats. Students created Crazy Patterned Snakes and used many designs to make their snakes colorful and neat.
Last week, students started the Artistic Journey Abroad unit and they will learn all about traveling and art. Students created Hot Air Balloon mixed media projects. This week, students learned about passports and how traveling outside the country requires passport books and stamp/printing art. Students will also create their own mixed media suitcase designs to "pack," and students will take off on an imaginary travel adventure to several different countries in the next few weeks. Bonjour!

At the Main building, 3rd grade students started an In My Community unit. Students have been finishing their Identity Flag Designs and the results are soon to come. 4th grade artists have also been learning about observations seen in their community, including different styles of architecture. 4th grade artists have been creating some amazing Architecture House Designs.
The upper grade students have been creating some amazing pieces also! 6th grade artists worked on their Pop Culture unit, creating their unique logo designs. Students enjoyed an eye-opening guest presentation from Mrs. Lambert, a professional graphic designer in our community! 6th grade also worked on Optical Illusion art unit using technical skills and learning about color theory. The 7th and 8th grade artists learned about contour and blind contour line drawings. They created Contour Hand Drawing projects (these will be displayed on a bulletin outside rm. 101 this week). They also learned about Surrealism in art, examined paintings by Rene Magritte and Salvador Dali, and created their own Surreal Fantasy Collages. Currently, the 7/8th grade artists are completing some 3-D technical watercolor pencil paintings inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright and other 3-D artists.
